Most sports require a bunch of equipment. Soccer is different in that it requires very little. You need proper footwear and a few other things, but really not much. Footwear is crucial though. Soccer Jersey your jersey will be a team shirt made out of a quick-drying synthetic fabric. It's going to be comfortable and likely somewhat loose fitting, and may have short or long sleeves. For women, there are special jerseys that are fit for women's bodies, to be closer at the waist and fitted through the shoulders.
Shorts: Players generally prefer to wear wide, baggy shorts. These look like running shorts, but perhaps baggier. There aren't a whole lot of rules about shorts in soccer.
The key is for movement to be unimpeded. Because of this you probably want to stay away from the longer basketball style shorts that hit below the knee.
Socks: soccer socks generally come up to the knee, and are made of a thick, durable fabric that is either synthetic or cotton. Make sure to pick socks that protect your feet from friction from your shoes, and that also cover your shin guards.
Shin guards: you have to have these, regardless of what level of soccer player you are. They are basic safety equipment designed to protect you from bruises and other damage to your shins.
They go on the front of your leg, along the shin bone, and are secured with Velcro straps. The size of the guard depends on the position you play. Strikers will have on lighter, smaller models. Maximum coverage pairs are best for midfielders, goalkeepers and defenders. Even most recreational leagues require players to wear shin guards.
Headgear: Many soccer players wear headgear. This is especially popular with younger players. The headgear worn in soccer looks like a headband. It's quite light, and it helps prevent injury when players' heads hit together or when you head the ball.
